Chapter 17

-Ryder-

Our first day on vacation we did nothing but play an elongated game of twenty questions. Some of it got awkward, but through all it we had fun. I thought it was a very good thing for us because neither one of us wanted to come across any surprises in the future. The second day we didn’t leave the cabin. We were active, but we didn’t leave the cabin.

The evening of the third day, we decided to go to the special restaurant that I wanted to visit. We had spent most of the day out on the deck, watching the view. I never thought I would get so much enjoyment out of doing something as simple as playing with someone’s hair.

When it started to get dark, we both went to get ready for the evening. On the end of our first night here, we had done some shopping for nice clothes that we could wear to be fancy. She wouldn’t let me see what she bought, and I did the same to her just to keep things even.

My outfit was nothing spectacular. I had gotten a nice pair of black slacks and a nice white shirt. I wasn’t proud of it, but it was the nicest I had ever been dressed in my entire life. Grace was worth it though.

“The reservation is in twenty minutes, but we can drive if you need more time,” I said while I was looking down at my phone.

“No, I’m almost ready,” she said from the bathroom. “I want to walk. I love walking with you.”

I killed time by pacing around the living room. When the bedroom door opened and Grace walked out, it was worth every second of the wait. She took my breath away. The slick black dress she wore stopped just above her knees, and the short heels were a nice touch. I had to admit that it was very obvious she had not spent a ton of time walking in that type of shoe. Her hair was lying perfectly with just a little bounce.

“Well?” she asked, spinning around on the spot. I realized I was just standing there, staring at her with my mouth hanging open.

“You look . . .” I said, putting my hands together in front of my mouth, searching for the perfect words. “Gorgeous!” I said, taking her hand and giving the back of it a kiss.

“Thank you,” she said uncomfortably, putting a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Shall we?” I asked, motioning toward the door while holding her hand. I never wanted to let it go.

We made our way down the hill. There was more foot traffic that night than there had been the entire time we had been in Redleaf. It was hard for us to talk candidly without feeling like someone was listening in on us.

“I think I made a mistake by not taking the offer to drive,” she said, grabbing my shoulder to catch her balance.

“We’re almost there,” I said, smiling while I helped her.
